Yixing Red Tea

Yixing County, home of Yixing Red Tea, is famous with tea lovers because it is where the famous Yixing Teapots are made. The little known Tea is loved by locals, but rarely available in other parts of China, and cannot be found in the West. It is a shame because it is a wonderful tea with a rich and robust flavor and aroma. The tea got its name for the county in which it is produced. Its history dates back to the Tang dynasty (618-907A.D.) and has been mentioned in many famous ancient texts on tea. When picking the leaves, the pickers pick the tea bud and the one leaf next to it. Because only the buds and small new leaves are used, it takes a large amount of leaves to make up one kilo of tea. The tea’s processed leaves have a dark red tint to them and the brewed tea is has a rich red color. The tea is robust with a hint of flowers and leaves a wonderfully long lasting aftertaste. The aroma is fantastic and fills the room.

Is it Red Tea or is it Black Tea There is some confusion as to whether this tea is a Red Tea or a Black Tea. The reason for this is that in the west the category of this tea, which in China is called "Red Tea", is called "Black Tea". There is another category of Chinese Tea that when incorrectly translated, is translated into Black Tea. In reality, this tea's English translation is "Dark Tea". So sometimes this tea is called Yixing Red Tea and sometimes it is called Yixing Black Tea. In reality, they are the same tea.

Fake Teas Due to the fact that this tea is not known outside of its growing area, there is virtually no fake tea on the market.
