Red Tea Health Benefits

Unbeknownst to most people there are significant Red Tea health benefits. Until recently scientists have focused on Green Tea, but now they are branching out into different types of Chinese Teas and are finding many startling results. The reason Red Teas were ignored until recently that it was thought that the fermentation process in the production reduces the health benefits significantly. It has been found in recent studies that compounds such as Theaflavins and Thearubigens provide many health benefits thought to exist only in Green Teas.

Caffeine levels
The amount of caffeine in Red Tea is significantly less than found in coffee. The low amounts of caffeine promote blood flow to the brain without over stimulating the heart. It can sharpen mental focus and concentration

Heart Health
A recently concluded study by the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and Environment found that one of Red Tea's health benefits is the reduction of strokes. 552 men were studied over a 15 year period. Researchers at the institute found that the flavonoids in Red Tea help reduce the production of LDL, the cholesterol that can lead to strokes and heart attacks. It was also found that men who drank more than four cups of Red Tea per day had a significantly lower risk of strokes than men who drank two or three cups each day.

A four month study conducted by Dr. Joseph Vita at Boston’s School of Medicine consisted of 66 male participants. One group drank four cups of Black Tea, and a control group drank placebos daily. It was concluded that Red Tea can help improve the functioning of blood vessels within two hours of drinking a single cup of Red Tea.

Recently a study conducted by the American Heart Association confirmed that people who drink Red Tea have a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. The 8 week study had 50 participants. Each participant drank four cups of either water, or tea for a period of four weeks. Healthy people’s bodies release a chemical called nitric oxide which causes arteries to dilate. People with coronary diseases produce less and therefore their arteries do not dilate normally. The study concluded that Red Tea can reverse this abnormality.

Cancer Prevention
One of the Red Tea health benefits of greatest interest to people is its ability to act as a cancer preventative. Red Tea has high levels of antioxidants, which have been found to stop the oxidation which can turn normal cells into cancer cells.

Cholesterol
Another Red Tea health benefit is the ability to lower cholesterol levels. Drinking two cups of Red Tea every day for three weeks opens capillaries and helps maintain normal blood pressure.

Tooth Health
The trace element fluoride is found in Red Tea. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel, so drinking Red Tea can inhibit tooth decay. Drinking the Tea can also fight bacteria in the mouth which cause gum disease.

Recently the Tea Trade Health Research Association funded a study which found that drinking Red Tea daily can help reduce plaque build-up and fight bacteria.

A recent study done by the University of Illinois announced that Red Tea can inhibit the growth of bacteria that promotes cavities.

Digestive Health
Red Tea contains tannins, which have anti-inflammatory effects on the digestive track. It can help relieve diarrhea.

Respiratory Health
Red Tea contains the element theophylline, which is often used by doctors to help fight respiratory diseases such as asthma. It expands airways making it easier to breath.

Arthritis
Recent research suggests that older women who are regular Red Tea drinkers are 60 percent less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than non tea drinkers.

It is believed that in the near future many other Red Tea health benefits will be discovered. It is an exciting time for tea drinkers. It is wonderful to discover that our beloved tea is not only delicious, but good for you.
